What a sensational opportunity to work on the Novotel Nusa Dua in Bali! After recently relocating and setting up a design studio in Melbourne, the tropical warm weather of Bali was a delight to make site visits !
There were some key elements to the original brief that we turned on its head to reinvent the hotel suites! The owner’s instructions were to replace all the timber floors with gloss cream tiles and gut the kitchens and bathrooms to lighten up the rooms. However, upon inspection of the suites, what struck me was the authenticity of the solid timber and stone floors along with the unique texture of the doors & kitchen joinery! So, we set to working around these essential elements, not only to preserve them but enhance them!
We introduced natural textures and traditional carvings to bring a sense of place. We dulled off all glossy finishes to be more at one with the earth and had some fun with pops of colour in the photographic artwork.
